Meeting the Mets in Florida

Port St. Lucie is a thriving community that happens to be one of the fastest growing cities in the country, despite having been recently hit by three major hurricanes in two years (truly a testament to Americans’ never-give-up attitude). It is a pleasant little town, much like many of the other settlements that dot Florida’s Treasure Coast – it is a place to go to get away from the club-dominated culture of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. That’s not to say there is nothing to do here – St. Lucie has a number of annual events that are quite charming, from their Oktoberfest to their kids’ fishing tournament. As a matter of fact, Port St. Lucie has something no other city in Florida (and only one other city in the world) can offer: The New York Metropolitans.

That’s right; the Mets home away from home is St. Lucie, Florida – where you can find both their farm team (the St. Lucie Mets) and the New York Mets spring training facilities and stadiums. As any baseball fan knows, Florida is one the the hot spots for spring training action, offering fantastic games at a fraction of the price they would be during the actual season.

The Mets’ stadium in Florida is a very nice facility called Tradition Field. One of the more colorful parts of the stadium is the Bat House. When the stadium was first built in 1988, bats became a large problem, infesting the stadium and getting in the hair of the players and fans (as bats are known to do). To combat this hairy menace from the skies, a bat-house was built nearby, thereby appeasing the creatures, and making Tradition Field safe for baseball.

St. Lucie is a perfect destination for any Mets fan (or baseball fan in general). A trip to Port St. Lucie would be an ideal gift for such a person – you could even rent a limousine from Millenium Limo to chauffeur you from game to game across Florida, an easily affordable expense considering all the money you’ll be saving on tickets.
